La centrale nucleare degli USA "Three Mile Island" che riapre per alimentare l'intelligenza artificiale

Chiuso dopo un grave incidente, l'impianto di Three Mile Island negli Usa riprenderà a produrre elettricità per i data center di Microsoft

Il primo reattore fu chiuso nel 1979 in seguito al più grave incidente nucleare della storia degli Stati Uniti. Il secondo e ultimo fu spento nel 2019 perché non era più economicamente sostenibile. 

Adesso, però, la centrale atomica di Three Mile Island, nello Stato orientale della Pennsylvania, è pronta a tornare a produrre elettricità per sostenere il progesso digitale: a partire dal 2028, alimenterà i data center di Microsoft per l'intelligenza artificiale.

Ritorno al nucleare

Il piano è stato annunciato venerdì dalla Constellation Energy, proprietaria della centrale, ribattezzata con il nome "green friendly" di Crane Clean Energy Center: in base a un accordo raggiunto con il gigante tecnologico di Bill Gates, verrà ripristinato il servizio del reattore TMI 1, quello in uso fino a cinque anni fa. 

Secondo l'azienda, la produzione "aggiungerà circa 835 megawatt di energia priva di emissioni di carbonio alla rete, creerà 3.400 posti di lavoro diretti e indiretti e genererà più di 3 miliardi di dollari in tasse statali e federali". 

L'investimento complessivo è di 1,6 miliardi di dollari (1,4 miliardi di euro).

"Le centrali nucleari sono le uniche fonti di energia in grado di mantenere costantemente questa promessa", ha affermato in una nota Joe Dominguez, amministratore delegato di Constellation.

Le aziende hanno affermato che l'energia prodotta dall'impianto verrebbe utilizzata per compensare il consumo di elettricità del data center di Microsoft.

"Spetta a Constellation esporre le motivazioni per giustificare il riavvio, quindi siamo pronti a collaborare con l'azienda sui prossimi passi", ha affermato il portavoce della Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Scott Burnell.

Constellation ha affermato di aspettarsi che il processo di revisione della NRC venga completato nel 2027.

L'intelligenza artificiale di Microsoft

Microsoft acquisterà l'elettricità generata per almeno vent'anni. È la prima volta che il gruppo tecnologico si assicura un proprio impianto completamente nucleare per proprio uso. L'operazione si è resa necessaria in seguito ai piani di sviluppo dell'IA, che richiederanno consumi crescenti di elettricità per tenere accesi i data center.

Closed after a major accident, the Three Mile Island plant in the U.S. will resume generating electricity for Microsoft's data centers

The first reactor was shut down in 1979 following the most serious nuclear accident in U.S. history. The second and final one was shut down in 2019 because it was no longer economically viable. 

Now, however, the Three Mile Island atomic power plant in the eastern state of Pennsylvania is ready to return to generating electricity to support the digital progess: starting in 2028, it will power Microsoft's artificial intelligence data centers.

Return to nuclear power

The plan was announced Friday by Constellation Energy, owner of the plant, renamed the “green friendly” Crane Clean Energy Center: under an agreement reached with Bill Gates' tech giant, service will be restored to the TMI 1 reactor, the one in use until five years ago. 

According to the company, the production will “add approximately 835 megawatts of carbon-free power to the grid, create 3,400 direct and indirect jobs, and generate more than $3 billion in state and federal taxes.” 

The total investment is $1.6 billion (1.4 billion euros).

“Nuclear power plants are the only energy sources that can consistently deliver on this promise,” Joe Dominguez, CEO of Constellation, said in a note.

The companies said energy produced by the plant would be used to offset the electricity consumption of Microsoft's data center.

The revitalization of Three Mile Island, however, still needs federal, state and local approvals

“It is up to Constellation to lay out the rationale to justify the restart, so we are ready to work with the company on next steps,” said Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) spokesman Scott Burnell.

Constellation said it expects the NRC's review process to be completed in 2027.

Microsoft's artificial intelligence

Microsoft will buy the electricity it generates for at least 20 years. This is the first time the technology group has secured its own fully nuclear power plant for its own use. The deal was necessitated by AI development plans, which will require increasing electricity consumption to keep data centers running.
